In 333 BC, Alexander the Great routed the Persian army of Darius III at Issus — and in 1529, Albrecht Altdorfer turned that victory into one of the most famous battle paintings ever made. Tens of thousands of soldiers clash beneath a sky split between the rising moon and the setting sun. The original hangs in the Alte Pinakothek in Munich. This one goes on your back.
