The Entry of Alexander into Babylon by Charles Le Brun

Charles Le Brun, The Entry of Alexander into Babylon, 1665. Oil on canvas, 450 × 707 cm. Musée du Louvre, Paris.

331 BC

Weeks after Gaugamela, Babylon opened its gates without a fight. Quintus Curtius describes the road strewn with flowers and garlands, silver altars burning frankincense, and the keeper of the citadel, Bagophanes, coming out to hand over the city and its treasury.

The scene

Le Brun shows Alexander entering in triumph, standing in a chariot drawn by elephants, with the spoils of Darius carried before him and the city’s terraced gardens rising behind. The canvas measures 4.5 by 7 metres.

323 BC

Alexander came back to Babylon eight years later and died there, in the palace of Nebuchadnezzar, at thirty-two. Fever, poison and exhaustion have all been argued since antiquity; the cause has never been settled.

The painter

Charles Le Brun (1619–1690) was First Painter to Louis XIV and directed both the royal Academy and the Gobelins tapestry works. Between 1665 and 1673 he painted four immense canvases on the life of Alexander: the Granicus, Arbela, the Entry into Babylon and Alexander and Porus. At court they were read as allusions to the young king’s own victories. All four are now in the Louvre.

The victory lap. After crushing Darius, Alexander entered Babylon in full triumph — golden chariot, war elephants, and the spoils of an empire carried through the gates. From the celebrated Alexander cycle painted for Louis XIV, this is the boldest print in the collection.
