Alexandria · 331 BC — Hoodie
Placido Costanzi, Alexander the Great Founding Alexandria, 1736–37. Walters Art Museum, Baltimore.
331 BC
Having taken Egypt from the Persians, Alexander chose a strip of coast west of the Nile Delta for a city in his own name. Plutarch says there was no chalk to mark out the plan, so the lines were traced in barley meal. Birds came down and ate it, and the seers read it as a sign that the city would feed many peoples.
The scene
Costanzi shows Alexander in a plumed helmet, pointing, as the architect Dinocrates of Rhodes holds out the plan. Behind them masons are already raising the walls; above, allegorical figures look on from a cloud.
The tomb
Alexander never saw the city finished. After his death in Babylon in 323 BC, his body was taken to Egypt and in time laid in a tomb at Alexandria, where Roman emperors came to see it. Where that tomb stood is still unknown.
The painter
Placido Costanzi (1702–1759) worked in Rome in the classical line of Raphael and Domenichino. He trained under Benedetto Luti and often painted the figures in other artists’ landscapes. In 1735 he was among the painters chosen to supply scenes from Alexander’s life for the throne room of Philip V of Spain at La Granja; this is his study for that canvas. He later led the Accademia di San Luca.
