Alexander and Porus by Charles Le Brun

Charles Le Brun, Alexander and Porus, 1673. Oil on canvas. Musée du Louvre, Paris.

326 BC

On the river Hydaspes, the modern Jhelum in Pakistan, Alexander faced Porus, king of the Pauravas, and his war elephants. He crossed the river by night in a storm, upstream of the Indian camp, and won one of the hardest-fought battles of his life.

The scene

Porus fought on until he was wounded and taken. Asked how he wished to be treated, he answered, “Like a king.” Alexander gave him back his kingdom and added more land to it. Le Brun paints the meeting: the wounded king carried before Alexander on horseback.

After

Bucephalus, the horse Alexander had tamed as a boy, died after the battle, and Alexander founded a city on the river in his name, Bucephala. A few months later, at the river Hyphasis, his army refused to go any further east.

The painter

Charles Le Brun (1619–1690) was First Painter to Louis XIV and directed both the royal Academy and the Gobelins tapestry works. Between 1665 and 1673 he painted four immense canvases on the life of Alexander: the Granicus, Arbela, the Entry into Babylon and Alexander and Porus. At court they were read as allusions to the young king’s own victories. All four are now in the Louvre.

326 BC — Alexander's hardest fight. On the banks of the Hydaspes, King Porus and his war elephants made the Macedonians earn every step, in the last great battle of the campaign. Le Brun painted it as pure theatre: rearing horses, fallen shields, and Alexander at the centre of the storm.

The gold sun embroidered at the chest; the painting on the back, held in a thin antique-gold frame with its place and year. On our classic shirt in Navy — soft and light, with just the right amount of stretch.
