Eleven days earlier the moon had been eclipsed, and Babylonian astronomers set down both the eclipse and the battle in their records.\u003cbr\u003e\n\u003cbr\u003e\nThe eagle\u003cbr\u003e\n\u003cbr\u003e\nAs the lines closed, Plutarch says, the seer Aristander pointed to an eagle soaring above Alexander’s head and flying straight toward the enemy. The carver chose that moment: Alexander on Bucephalus, the eagle overhead, Darius already in flight. Within a year Darius was dead, killed by his own satrap Bessus.\u003cbr\u003e\n\u003cbr\u003e\nThe work\u003cbr\u003e\n\u003cbr\u003e\nAn unknown carver of the eighteenth century cut this relief from ivory in high, middle and low relief. Its composition follows The Battle of Arbela, painted in 1669 by Charles Le Brun, First Painter to Louis XIV, for the royal Gobelins tapestry works. Arbela is the older name for the same battle. The relief is now in the Museo Arqueológico Nacional, Madrid.\u003cbr\u003e\n\u003cbr\u003e\nNot a painting — a carving.
