Plutarch says there was no chalk to mark out the plan, so the lines were traced in barley meal. After his death in Babylon in 323 BC, his body was taken to Egypt and in time laid in a tomb at Alexandria, where Roman emperors came to see it. In 1735 he was among the painters chosen to supply scenes from Alexander’s life for the throne room of Philip V of Spain at La Granja; this is his study for that canvas.
